Classics Club is open to Middle School Students (Grades 7 and 8)
Instructor: Dominic Ianiro
Day/Time: Tuesdays, 5:00-6:15pm
Fall Session - 9/19/23 - 11/14/23
Description: Classics Club is for any Middle School student who is interested in learning more about Ancient Mediterranean Culture, Archaeology, Literature, Architecture, and Language. We will engage in different projects throughout the school-year to better understand ancient themes. We will also delve into lessons concerning how we, especially Americans, are influenced today by ancient civilizations while gaining a rudimentary understanding of Latin. Our study of Latin will have two goals: 1. To understand English at its root levels (grammar and vocabulary) 2. Give students the confidence to enroll in Latin courses in high school.
Classics will be split into 3 sessions this year. Latin, history and mythology will be spread throughout each session. Below are the major projects that will be the focus of individual sessions:
Session 1 Project Focus Area:
Mythology in Ancient Literature - Comic Book Creation - The Labors of Hercules and an introduction to Ovid
Session 2 Project Focus Area:
Ancient Architecture and Language - Egyptian Public Buildings and an introduction to the Egyptian Hieroglyphic writing system
Session 3 Project Focus Area:
General Ancient Architecture, History and Geography - Reconstructing Classic Board Games
