Ratner FAQ


On this page, you’ll find some commonly asked questions about life at Ratner. We’ve provided what we hope will be helpful answers. Don’t see your question listed here? What time does school start and end? Can I drop my child off early/pick my child up late?
School begins at 8:30am and ends at 3:30pm. For students in the Toddler Program and Children's House, the school day ends depending on your child’s specific program: 11:30am or 3:30pm. Extended day options (7:30 am – 6:00 pm) are available for all students, toddler through 8th Grade (please contact the Front Office for more information about extended days: 216-464-0033).


Do I need to purchase school supplies?
Ratner provides most school supplies for students. Students will need their own backpack and lunchbox (if packing lunch), and students are welcome to bring their own writing implements if they have a preferred type, though pencils and pens are provided at school.


Is there bus transportation?
The following school districts provide busing to Ratner for students who live in those districts: Beachwood, Mayfield, Orange, Shaker Heights, Solon, South Euclid/Lyndhurst. Children must be at least 5 years old and enrolled in Kindergarten to be eligible for busing. Busing should be arranged between parents and their school district, though our Front Office staff can assist with the process. All other students must be transported to school, or have transportation arranged, by parents. Bus transportation for field trips and Middle School intramural athletics is arranged by Ratner.


What is Ratner’s food allergy policy?
Ratner maintains a nut-free campus. This includes peanuts and tree-nuts. All other food allergies should be communicated to the school via appropriate medical forms.


Can my child buy lunch at school?
Ratner’s lunch program features a monthly lunch menu, shared on the lunch page of our website. Parents can sign up for the full school year of lunches when their child enrolls, or can choose to purchase lunches on occasional days, month-by-month. Lunches are provided by Alesci’s Catering. All school lunches are nut free. More details are available here.


Does Ratner offer after-school programs and sports?
Ratner has a variety of after-school programs for students in grades 1 through 8. Programs encompass interests from art to science to sports, and more! Club descriptions, registration links, and associated fees can be found here. Middle School intramural sports are available to all students in Grades 5 – 8 at no cost. What if my child misses school?
Parents should contact the Front Office by 8:45am to notify the school about an unexpected absence (in the case of illness, for example). For planned absences, please notify the Front Office and classroom teachers as soon as your plans are known.


How will I find out if Ratner is closed for a snow day or an emergency?
As a general rule of thumb, if the Orange School District Schools are closed, Ratner will close as well. However, as we have families driving to Ratner from a much broader area, it is possible that Ratner would choose to close even when the Orange schools do not close. Additionally Orange occasionally closes for reasons not applicable to Ratner (power outage, for example). Therefore, it is important to pay close attention to Ratner’s emergency closing notifications. Ratner uses an emergency text alert system, and will also post any school closings on our website, social media, and local TV networks.


Does my child have summer reading assignments?
All students in Grades 1 – 8 are expected to complete summer assignments. The assignments can be found here. If you have questions about the assignments, please contact the school.


How can I get involved in the school community?
The Ratner Parent Organization (RPO) is always looking for volunteers! Whether you have just a little bit of time or a lot of time, can volunteer at school or prefer to do things from home, there are many ways to connect with our school community. Check out the RPO page of our website, or email the RPO at rpo@theratnerschool.org.


What are the important dates I should mark on my calendar?
You can find a list of important dates here, or you can visit the calendar page of our website. New items are added as the school year progresses (for example, field trips, or RPO events), so be sure to check back frequently!
