PRIMARY SCHOOL

The Primary School years at The Ratner School go from 1st Grade through 4th Grade.

The Montessori philosophy influence continues to be felt in our mixed-age group classrooms - 1st and 2nd Grades are combined as are 3rd and 4th Grades - as well as in the carefully cultivated spirit of personal inquiry that runs throughout the Primary classrooms.

ONE SIZE DOES NOT FIT ALL

Our daily schedule and the mechanics of our curriculum work together to enable each child’s learning to be highly targeted and individualized. For example, on a given day half the class may go to the Science lab, allowing the two teachers in the regular classroom to each work with half of the remaining half in reading, creating reading clusters as small as 3 to 6 students. In Ratner’s Primary School, we begin with each student’s needs and strengths and then chart his or her course for the year.

CURIOUS ABOUT ALL THE CULTURES AROUND THE GLOBE

Our Primary classrooms are rich in cultural exploration. We focus on the foundational elements of a global understanding such as geography in the homeroom, habitats in science, cultural artifacts in music and art. We introduce students in 1st/2nd Grades to technology so they can begin preparing to digest and understand global communications and dynamics when they enter the Middle School.
