Ratner Alum Chad Huey (Class of ’01) is flying high in the Air Force! Chad is following a long-standing family tradition of service to his country: his aunt is serving as a medical director in Dubai, his father is a trained Air Force and Navy pilot, one of his grandfathers served in the Navy, and his other grandfather was a WWII B-15 pilot!
After graduating from The Lillian and Betty Ratner School, Chad went on to graduate from Cleveland Heights High School where he began to try his hand at some interesting and successful business ventures, including running an e-bay business. Stephanie Goldscher, our Director of Admissions, knew Chad from Heights High School in her capacity as a counselor for gifted students.
“Chad’s entrepreneurial skills came to my attention, and I approached him to present a seminar as part of our Gifted Seminars Program. Students were fascinated to hear that one of their peers had conceived of an idea to purchase used golf clubs from area golf courses, clean them up, and sell them on ebay. It was one of the most exciting seminars we presented that year! Even the adults we invited were captivated by the extent to which Chad had learned the intricacies of navigating and using ebay to build a personal business. Beyond using ebay, Chad discussed how important it was to present a confident and polished image to the public. He had business cards printed and “dressed for success.”
Chad credits The Ratner School with fostering and encouraging the individualism and hands-on learning that led to his entrepreneurial spirit.
Seeking a more structured challenge, and embracing the family tradition of serving his country, Chad is now in training for the Air Force Special Operations Command’s combat controllers. This is a group of Battlefield Airmen assigned to special tactics squadrons. These Airmen are deployed into combat and hostile environments to establish assault zones and airfields, while conducting air traffic control, fire support, counter-terrorism, foreign internal defense, and humanitarian assistance among many other responsibilities. This is an intense program, and we wish Chad the best of luck!
